In the weeks leading up to the re-release of my novel Welcome To The Fold, I'll be making a series of posts to serve as an extended introduction to the book -- its origins, its influences, its themes, its setting and characters. Enjoy.
Last time I posted in this series, I introduced a few of the main characters - Kijé and Annika, the two faces of the main protagonist; her boyfriend Renton and his matching alter ego Berardinis. Now some notes about the rest of the cast:
Syula: One of the characters in the game: a "bandit queen" -- "first an enemy, then an ally, finally a rival once again." Her player, Chloë, resents Annika and Renton alike, and the ways they curry favor with the game's masters. This leads her to take actions that cause her to fall even further out of favor.
Dumoulin: Syula's right-hand man, a mammoth figure: "knucklebones the size of eyeballs, a jaw with a bend like an elbow's, and his flat-topped head bristling with hair so blond it was nearly white." His player sides with Radharc over Syula, the better to allow Radharc's player to consummate plans intended to liberate all of them in this world.
Delilah: The player of Kijé in a former incarnation of the game. Renton found out about her during research for his blog about the game, and learns from her many key facts about its constitution and possible future directions.
In the next installment of this series, I'll break out some of the themes the book touches on, and how I chose to treat them.
