This, That, The Other Dept.

tl;dr: Interesting things afoot avec mi casa.

Busy week, not much time for blogging, and I'm heading into an even busier weekend -- big, big changes at Chez Genji in store -- but a few things worth discussing.

First off, if you haven't seen it yet, my anime critique/review/think-piece site is now live and kicking. Our "about" page (yes, I'm using the editorial "we") should give you a good idea of what we're all about, and if not perhaps our pieces on why a film for the Tekken franchise outdid a Makoto Shinkai production for meAKIRA's legacy after 25 years, and why a growing number of shows seem to feature otaku as protagonists even when it's not really part of the story ought to do the trick. No news-firehose, no lists, no episode-summary stuff, since there are tons of other sites that already do those things and do them better anyway.

I'm proud of what I've been able to put together there on fairly short notice, and the short-term plan is to publish one long-form piece a week -- possibly two, as time permits. Many veteran posters from here have already started chiming in, so jump in and feel free to raise the level of the discourse all the more.

Genji Press and Movable Type

Also, a lot of the backend work I've done for Ganriki may get back-applied to Genji Press over time. I'm still using Movable Type, and some of the innovations I had to pull together for Ganriki have convinced me it's a terrifically robust platform for a lot of things, but in the long run I know I'm going to have to leave it behind. The development of the product has shifted to focus on their high-end paying customers, and us Joe Blogg[er]s types have been left eating dust and drinking sand.

By "long run" I mean 1-2 years, which is why I have my eye on Ghost as a possible successor for sometime outside that time frame. Reason I say this is, right now, Ghost is still far too underdeveloped for my taste. I'd need complete feature parity with my existing system before I could even consider switching, and they haven't even nailed down their plugin API properly. Give them time, though.

And no, sadly, WordPress isn't a viable option. It might have been once, but that time is long past. Unfortunately.

Thanks to a whole confluence of things that unfolded over the past couple of months, I've been enjoying a renewed interest in a hobby that I had as a younger man but which went into a long hibernation: video games. For various reasons -- not much time, not much interest, not much spare dough to throw at the issue --

Sometime in 2014, I'll either be adding a gaming wing to this site (most likely) or opening another mini-site devoted to that stuff, because I have a few projects in that vein that I know I'll want people to find out about and get their hands on.
