Roger Ebert 1942-2013.
I posted this elsewhere, but let me put it this way:
Roger is why I watched Koyaanisqatsi (with my jaw hanging open the whole time).
Roger is why I saw The Brother From Another Planet.
Roger is why I dug up Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia.
Roger is why I didn't feel so bad for thinking Dawn of the Dead was brilliant, because he felt the same way and explained it better than I could at my age.
Roger is why I wait for the middle of the month with bated breath for Criterion to announce their new titles.
Roger is why I have a Spirited Away poster on my wall.
Roger is why I questioned my feelings about Blue Velvet.
Roger is why I rejected his feelings about Harold and Maude.
Roger is why I thought NetFlix came late to the party, because he explained how Facets Video had been doing the rent-by-mail thing for a long time beforehand. (I never did get an account, though. By the time I could afford one, NetFlix came along.)
Roger is why I know there's life outside the multiplex.
Roger is why I spent $300 on my first LaserDisc player, because I know he'd always be able to recommend good things to play on it.
Roger is why I'm here with the rest of you.
Roger is why I watch movies at all.
